Ski Trip Planning: The 4 Best Weeks of the Year to Ski Park City

Whether you’re chasing the snow, seeking the best value, or hoping to catch World Cup athletes, timing matters. Here are the best times of year to plan your Park City ski vacation.

Best Spring Skiing: Last Week of March

Snow chasers can consistently count on March in Park City for powder-filled spring skiing, with recent years even pushing some of the best storms into April. With consistently great snow conditions, fewer spring break crowds, outdoor concerts and the lighthearted Spring Gruv festivities at Park City Mountain (including the famous pond skimming competition at Canyons Village), the last week of March is our pick for one last ski trip with friends.

Where to stay: Park City – The Colony

With out-the-door access to some of the best terrain at Park City Mountain, the gated community of The Colony is one of the best places to stay for powder hounds. Located in the mid-mountain area of Canyons Village, The Colony is a collection of slope-side private ski homes with amenities like private outdoor hot tubs, fitness rooms, theaters and indoor bars.

Best Value: First Week of January

Resorts West - Park City, Utah

For families who can plan their holiday ski trip with a little flexibility, the first week of January offers the best value of the season as accommodations become available at low season rates. With the holiday crowds gone from grocery stores, chairlifts and restaurants, you can enjoy a virtually line-free ski vacation.

Where to stay: Empire Pass – Deer Valley

As one of Deer Valley’s most desirable areas, the luxurious mid-mountain area of Empire Pass is often quickly filled during the holidays. Enjoy the same coveted location and lodging quality with the calm, quiet post-New Year’s atmosphere and exceptional value.

Best For Arts & Culture: Third Week of January

While the third week of January bears little significance in most mountain towns, it’s actually one of the most exciting times of the season to be in Park City. The Sundance Film Festival, now in its 33rd year, runs through the second half of January, taking place this year from January 19 to 29. Ticket sales open this week, although catching films from the waitlist is part of the thrill for many visitors. Sundance Institute also hosts ticketed industry discussions and panels available for public purchase. (Savvy skiers also enjoy this week in Park City as movie-goers fill the city’s accommodations, leaving the slopes wide open.)

Where to stay: Old Town Park City

Walk to Sundance Film Festival events on Main Street as well as Park City Mountain’s Town Lift from a home in Resorts West’s Main Street Collection, featuring luxury homes in Old Town.

Deer Valley – Deer Crest

Official Sundance Institute venues aren’t the only places to catch a film in Park City during the Festival. Many ski homes in Deer Crest, Deer Valley Resort’s most coveted gated community, feature their own in-home theaters, allowing skiers to enjoy film at their leisure — with out-the-door ski access for first tracks every morning.

Sundance Resort

Escape to calm, serene Sundance Resort, located 35 miles from Park City, for the full film experience, including events, as well as stunning scenery and fantastic skiing — without the Sundance crowds.

Best for Olympic Action: First Week of February

Aerial skiing at Deer Valley Resort

In a “preview” year ahead of the 2018 Olympics, Park City will give winter sports enthusiasts a look at past Olympians and future stars with two world-class competitions during the first week of February — both free and open to the public. At Deer Valley Resort, the FIS Freestyle World Cup will return with international aerial and mogul skiers competing at the Snow Park base from February 2-4. (See full schedule.) During the same weekend, Park City Mountain will host the 20th U.S. Snowboarding and Freeskiing Grand Prix at its Eagle Superpipe, easily visible near the base. (See full schedule.)

Where to stay: Deer Valley Resort – Snow Park

With great proximity to both Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain bases, Snow Park is an ideal location for enjoying all athletic events, including the opening outdoor concert on Main Street. Choose from private homes and luxurious townhomes, all offering private outdoor hot tubs.
