Park City’s 2011 ski season may be nearing a grand finale, but Canyons Resort has only just begun its biggest event of the year. “Spring Gruv,” a 10-day affair of music, film and lighthearted competition, begins this Saturday with the storied Pond Skimming Contest, a costumed affair that sends brave skiers or boarders across a 100-foot pond. A live performance by John Popper and the Duskray Troubadours follows on Sunday, and a special screening of Greta Eliassen’s movie, “Say My Name,” will take place on April 2.
Before the excitement of Spring Gruv, Canyons Wine Club will host a sleigh ride and dinner Friday night with a special menu and wine pairing. Billed as an “Evening in Napa,” the event features reception appetizers, a four-course meal, dessert and five different wines from Napa’s Somerston Winery. David Zurowski, Director of Somerston Winery, will attend as a special guest.

Canyons Resort has announced that it will extend the 2011 ski season with a new close date of April 17. Thanks to nearly three feet of new snow in the last week with another two feet expected in the next few days, Utah’s largest ski resort is confident that these conditions, combined with advanced snowmaking abilities and a 270-inch base, will see skiers and snowboarders through a powder-filled spring.
“The ski conditions have been phenomenal,” said Mike Goar, Canyons managing director. “And our improved snowmaking capabilities will allow us to extend our season and offer the best ski experience in Utah well into the spring.”
Several of the new dining and apres options that Canyons introduced this year as part of a series of on-mountain improvements will also remain open, including a new restaurant focused on locally grown foods called The Farm, which is expected to debut this month. The Canyons’ state-of-the-art heated Orange Bubble lift and new ski beach will also remain open through April 17.

2350 Red Pine Home – A 6,700 square-foot home featuring 6 bedrooms, a theater with projector screen and recliners, pool table and private hot tub.

Whether attending the Sundance Film Festival for the first time or the 27th, movie buffs and film enthusiasts will find new experiences every time they visit Park City. For the 2011 Festival, Resorts West locals share these 5 suggestions for making even more discoveries this year:
1. Spend a day on the slopes – While many visitors in town attend screenings and events, fresh Park City powder often falls on crowdless mountains. This year, Resorts West recommends connecting with another art form during the Festival and experiencing the thrill of skiing or riding at one Park City’s three world-class resorts. (Extra tip: Visit Park City Mountain Resort from Jan. 21 to 23 and try new Burton demo equipment without a rental fee.)
2. Go off-Main for dinner - Park City boasts more than 100 fine dining restaurants, featuring haute cuisine from around the world. While many of these establishments lie in the heart of town, some of Park City’s biggest culinary gems lie just a few minutes from Main Street. To avoid the crowds for a unique experience, we recommend Fireside Dining at Deer Valley Resort, the simple elegance of the French-inspired Spruce at Canyons Resort, and the mouth-watering Swiss fare at Adolph’s European Continental restaurant in Prospector. (Extra tip: Make a reservation outside peak times — before 6 p.m. or after 8 p.m. – for even greater service.)
3. Consider what your Park City accommodations include when securing lodging. Choosing a lodging provider with concierge service, grocery delivery, daily housekeeping and shuttle service can greatly enhance your Festival experience, elminiating time-consuming hassles. (Extra tip: Resorts West offers Private Concierge service, top-of-the-line amenities, daily housekeeping and in-town shuttle service based on availability. Call 1-877-773-1117 to speak with a vacation specialist about available properties during the Festival.)
4. Don’t neglect the shorts — or the less-publicized films in the lineup. Make an effort to see something that lies under the limelight. The documentaries, New Frontier selections and short films often hold the biggest surprises. By the same token, the Music Cafe, art galleries and panels offered by Sundance Institute can lead to a whole new Festival experience.
5. Come prepared with the necessities - Face it – it’s cold in Park City, and the Festival can become an overwhelming 10 days if unprepared. Essential items recommended by Resorts West locals include cold medicine, warm boots, an even warmer hat, fleece-lined gloves and lip balm.
This year’s Sundance Film Festival, running from Jan. 20 to 30, will feature 118 feature-length films by artists from 29 countries, including 40 first-time filmmakers. Ninety-five screening will be world premiers. Celebrities expected to promote their films at this year’s Festival include Liv Tyler, Kate Bosworth, Demi Moore, Ellen Barkin, Emma Roberts, Vera Farmiga and John C. Reilly. Michael Moore, Greg Ginnear and Pamela Yates are among those expected to speak at Sundance Institute panels.
With more than 5 feet of snow this season, including 14 inches in the last three days, Park City Mountain Resort has opened to its best start in nearly a decade, with five runs and three lifts in operation thanks to several pre-Thanksgiving snow storms. Park City joins five other Utah ski resorts in the early season boon with three more expected to open this week.
The service-centric Deer Valley Resort, voted the no. 1 ski resort in North America for the fourth consecutive year, will open Dec. 4 with the traditional Deer Valley Celebrity Skifest, a giant slalom race featuring former Olympians and film stars to benefit environmental advocacy group Waterkeeper Alliance. Larry David, Bobby Kennedy and Virginia Madsen are among those confirmed to attend.
Canyons Resort will follow on Dec. 10 with several multi-million dollar improvements, including new lifts, the respositioning of its main gondola to reach the base, more open terrain, restaurants and a brand new ski beach.
Resorts already open include Brighton, Snowbird, Alta, Solitude and Brian’s Head.
Snow is expected to continue in Park City through next week, with four days of forecasted storms. To start planning a Park City ski vacation, call 1-877-773-1117 to talk to a ski expert. Ski-in/ski-out lodging options, including lodge condos and private homes, are available for the holiday season.

Whether it’s your first Park City ski vacation or your tenth, choosing the right lodging can make all the difference between a “nice” experience and a vacation to remember forever! A little research can go a long way to ensuring maximum time on the slopes and easy access to what’s really important to your family and friends. This guide can help you determine what to look for in choosing lodging for your next Park City or Deer Valley ski vacation:
Families
Easy access to ski school and close proximity to kid-friendly events are just part of the equation for a perfect family ski vacation. Equally important is choosing a property with enough room to give kids their space while checking off the safety extras mom looks for — things like industrially cleaned linens, regularly checked carbon monoxide monitors and concierge service to arrange meals, child care, cribs and other family necessities. Silver Star at Park City is a great option for families with kids of all ages, featuring an on-site ski shop, wholesome cafe and complimentary shuttle service to ski school, just two minutes away.

Friends
You didn’t plan a ski vacation with old friends to hide out in separate hotel rooms. A private vacation home lets you reunite together with meals around a dining room table, cozy evenings by the fireplace, and fun nights shooting pool in the den, enjoying the wet bar or soaking in the hot tub. Resorts West’s private homes and lodges offer exceptional value, slope-side ski access and a host of services to simplify your vacation planning. A dedicated Private Concierge will help you with everything from shipping your luggage before you arrive to arranging dinner reservations for your whole group.

Couples
A well-intentioned romantic getaway can quickly fall flat with the wrong accommodations and poor planning. Choosing a private condo in the mountains is the perfect retreat to ensure your privacy without sacrificing convenience. A luxury condo at the Grand Lodge or Silver Strike offers premium ski-in/ski-out access, cozy fireplaces, plush decor and a gourmet kitchen, complete with Private Concierge service to stock it full of your favorite foods or even your favorite champagne. Your Private Concierge can also arrange an in-room massage or a romantic night out in Park City — with complimentary shuttle service, of course. Before booking a romantic ski vacation, ensure your accommodations include the services to provide a relaxing and hassle-free getaway.
