The Sprio Artist in Residency studio at Silver Star was first used in Park City's mining days.

This wave of artists will be the second this year for Spiro Arts, a nonprofit organization that works to give visual artists, photographers, writers and musicians an opportunity to focus solely on the creative process while enriching the community with their experiences. Artists offer lectures, studio tours, exhibitions and workshops as part of their six-week residency.

Arists attending the 2012 second-term residency include Susannah Mira, a mixed-media artist from Philadelphia; Becky Alprin, a sculptor and painter based in Chicago; Rosemary Feit Covey, a painter from the Washington, DC area; and this session’s token male, Suk-Jun Kim, a South Korean musical composer now living in Scotland.

This is the flavor of this summer’s ”Big Stars, Bright Lights” outdoor concert series after the announcement of its first three acts. Gospel star Aaron Neville will kick off the series on July 13 with his Dirty Dozen Band in a soulful tribute to post-Katrina New Orleans, followed by actor/cowboy/singer/songwriter Dwight Yoakam on July 29. The legendary voice of Supertramp, Roger Hodgson, will appear in a grand finale on Aug. 5.

As mentioned above, I, Chelsey Clark, am a complete newbie to the Park City lifestyle. 

As I begin my few months of life as an intern for Resorts West, I have decided to take anyone and everyone along on this journey.  So please, join me!

Coming from the barren and desert laden land of eastern Washington, Utah as a whole is a different and fresh scenery.  The Olympics is what originally put Utah on my radar and Park City is a perfect representation of the ideal ski town that still has the contagious Olympic spirit and pride.

Not only are there the beautiful as well as abundant ski slopes and resorts, but Park City also has a unique old mine town feel that seems to draw crowds of all kinds. After walking down Main Street I was thrilled by the variety of little shops, boutiques and restaurants — to the point I needed to shop and I needed to eat, the two most important activities in life as far as I am concerned.  Luckily, I was able to do a bit of both.

I have had the wonderful opportunity of trying Wahso, An Asian Grill; Zoom, a Sundance Resort Restaurant; and Maxwell’s East Coast Eatery.  Each has a definite different feel and flavor,  each delivered a tasty and environmentally appropriate experience.

After finding the landscape, shopping and dining brag-worthy, I was amazed to learn of the unique lodging options Park City has to offer. The 953 Empire Home is definitely a favorite of mine for its proximity to Main Street as well as all three ski resorts.  With a cozy yet modern feel, it is an inviting choice after a fun-filled day on the slopes.

Mountain Glade Home at Deer Valley Resort sits on a private ski run in Deer Crest

You don’t need to get first chair to enjoy first tracks. Armed with the right accommodations and a few locals’ secrets, you can ski fresh powder before the crowds hit, even if you sleep in a little.

The key to first dibs on fresh powder is staying mid-mountain at a ski-in/ski-out home. From your back door you can ski right onto the mountain, so you’re already taking turns while others are riding the chairlift. Mid-mountain accommodations are also two chairlifts from the base, so you can get a few runs in before most skiers can catch up. The Empire Pass area and the gated community of Deer Crest at are the best areas for fresh tracks at Deer Valley. The intermediate Fairview and Silver Hill runs in the Deer Crest area are often less skied that other parts of the mountain, leaving powder for guests who find them. Orion and Supreme from the Empire Express lift offer good pockets of powder to intermediate skiers as well.

At Canyons Resort, the spacious homes off Peak 5 run offer pristine powder and luxury accommodations perfect for multiple families or groups of friends. Can you spot the Grand Lodge?

The sprinkle of snow that began Thursday night in Park City became a full-blown storm by the next day, leaving 36 inches of fresh powder for skiers by Sunday afternoon and another 5 inches before Tuesday morning. Deer Valley Resort, which had opened all 21 of its lifts by last week thanks to heroic snowmaking efforts, has now opened 93 of its 100 runs. Park City Mountain Resort has opened 103 runs, and Canyons Resort has opened 117.

Skiers at all three resorts enjoyed knee-high powder over the weekend and can look forward to more snow-filled days throughout this week. The forecast calls for steady snow through Wednesday with scattered snow showers on Friday.

Larry David and Mary J. Blige are among the A-Listers who will hit the slopes for a good cause on Saturday at the 20th annual Deer Valley Celebrity Skifest. An opening weekend tradition to support Waterkeeper Alliance, a global effort to protect clean water sources,  the Celebrity Skifest will feature 13 film and television stars who will compete against former Olympic ski racers in a giant slalom held at Deer Valley’s Silver Lake Village. This year, the Skifest will also feature live performances by R&B superstar Mary J. Blige with pop icon Gavin McDraw.

Deer Valley skiers can watch the races, held at noon on Dec. 3 and 4, from the Silver Lake ski beach. This year’s Olympic talent includes Tommy Moe, Steve and Phil Mahre, and Heidi Voelker. Other celebrities on the roster include Cheryl Hines and JB Smooth of Curve Your Enthusiasm; Patrick Warburton, Oliver Hudson and Bianca Kajlich of Rules of Engagement; Dylan Bruno (Saving Private Ryan); Trevor Donovan (90210); Kris Polaha (Life Unexpected); Hill Harper (CSI: NY); Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains) and Joey Pantoliano (Momento).

Among Deer Valley’s novelties this year is a new place in history. Readers at SKI Magazine voted the resort no. 1 in North America, marking the first time ever that a single resort has maintained the top spot five years in a row. This season, the resort has eliminated the need for young skiers to ride a chairlift by revamping the ski school area. Park City Mountain Resort

Named the no. 1 Family Ski Resort this year by the SKI Magazine reader survey, Park City Mountain has invested $7 million in improvements for the 2012 ski season. The resort has installed two new conveyor lifts for its beginner area and expanded freeride terrain, including improvements to the Eagle Superpipe that allows it to open earlier in the season. PCMR has also expanded its environmental efforts with more energy-efficient snowmaking or grooming equipment, a wind turbine and solar panels.

Utah’s largest ski and snowboard resort is now in phase #2 of a $50 million “re-creation” that last year included 300 acres of new terrain, new restaurants, a novel Orange Bubble Lift, a ski beach and enhanced snowmaking. Emilys Army, an up-and-coming pop-punk band, will play at Pipeline to a Cure

The fourth annual Pipeline to a Cure, a Los Angeles based fundraiser to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will take place this August 6 at the Hyatt Regency in Huntington Beach, California. The surf-themed event raised $450,000 last year for research and other programs, offering relief and hope to the 70,000 people affected by the disease world-wide.

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs and pancreas. The connection between surfing and Cystic Fibrosis began after Australian scientists realized that the salty air helped people with the disease to better eliminate that mucus, preventing serious lung infections and slowing digestive problems. 

Since this discovery, professional surfers Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama have led the charge in teaching kids with Cystic Fibrosis how to surf while raising funds toward fighting the disease. Since Cystic Fibrosis receives no government funding, public donations are the only way to promote research and programs for those affected. Hamilton and Kalama have co-chaired Pipeline to a Cure since its inception in 2008, helping to raise more than $1.3 million directly for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Fuel TV’s Matt Beacham and ”Ambassador of Country Music” Shawn Parr will co-host the event while punk-pop band Emily’s Army provides live musical entertainment. Highlights also include a gourmet dinner, cocktail reception, live and silent auctions and a VIP lounge.

As the biggest fundraising component of Pipeline, the live auction features surfing trips to Maui, travel packages to Costa Rica, custom surfboards and Olympic paraphernalia. The Kimball Arts Festival will return to Park City this August for the 42nd year, bringing visual, performing and culinary artists to Main Street for a three-day cultural celebration. More than 200 artists in 13 different mediums from across the country will exhibit their work in an open-air market from Aug. 5 to 7.

Following late March storms leading to a base to nearly 370 inches, Park City Mountain Resort has extended its 2011 season by a week for the third consecutive year.  This year’s snowfall has exceeded Park City’s average of 365 inches per year, with more powder expected throughout this week. Night skiing is open at Payday (blue), First Time (green), and the Three Kings terrain park.

Park City Mountain Resort opened night skiing on Christmas Day with three lifts in operation. Skiers and snowboarders can now enjoy an extra five hours on the slopes after the resort’s typical 4 p.m. close thanks to new lighting at First Time run, Payday, and the newly introduced Three Kings terrain park. Day passes now include 12 hours of skiing starting at 9 a.m., while special Twighlight and Night-Only passes offer the option to ski from 12:30 to 9 p.m. or 4 to 9 p.m., respectively.

Silver Star lift is open for the 2010-2011 season.

Park City Mountain Resort has opened the popular King Con mountain zone, including the King Con and Silver Star lifts. With more than 20 inches of fresh snow in the last 24 hours and four more days of powder forecasted through Christmas, Park City is moving rapidly toward a fully open mountain. The Silver Star lift serves the advanced First Temptation run, the intermediate Silver Star run and the groomed intermediate Spiro run, which allows skiers to ski directly into the Silver Star village.  

All on-mountain restaurants and dining options have also fully opened, including the Silver Star Cafe which recently launched breakfast operations.

Deer Valley's lifts will begin running this weekend.
